New Numbers Out on Summer Pool Drownings - Make Sure You're Taking Precautions

Each year, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission publishes the number of pool drownings nationwide in an effort to raise public awareness and, hopefully, vigilence. Last week, the U.S. CPSC released a report with summer 2012 figures.

Nationwide, the Commission reports, there were nearly 140 drownings covered by the media. Because the figure requires the media to first cover the story, the announcement states that the number is likely higher and will later be adjusted.

We are reporting on the interim report in an effort to raise awareness and reduce the number of drownings and injuries. Many people have always dreamed of having a pool in their yard. With the reduction of cost associated with above-ground pools in recent years, many Massachusetts residents are now living the dream.

However, as you may have learned when watching the coverage of one of these tragic stories this summer, having a swimming pool means you are governed by state regulations and law regarding required safety precautions. Probably most important: if you have a pool, including an above ground pool, you are required to have a fence all the way around the pool.

Most child drownings are children 5 years of age or younger and occur when the child was in the presence of adults or just momentaly prior in the presence of an adult. Be vigilant over your young children, and be sure they are unable to access the pool when you are not there.

If you or a loved one has been the victim of a swimming pool accident or drowning, call to learn about your rights today.
