Boston's Personal Injury Intersections

Personal injury cases most commonly arise out of car accidents. The most common causes for major accidents are speeding, impaired or drowsy driving and distracted driving, but poor roadway design and maintenance can be factors as well. Each year the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (DOT) Highway Division uses crash data collected by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) in order to produce a compiled report of dangerous intersections. The RMV gets the data from police reports and reports from drivers involved in the crashes.

In September 2012, the MassDOT published a report of "The Top 200 High Crash Intersection Locations 2008-2010." To determine which locations have the most crashes, the DOT has an automated system that uses a 25 meter radius around each crash site to search for other crashes and merge them into one "crash cluster." The clusters are then ranked based on the number of Equivalent Property Damage Only (EPDO) within the cluster boundaries. Crashes with a fatality are weighted by 10, injury crashes are weighted by 5 and property damage only is weighted by 1. The report is then used to determine where tax dollars should be used to improve safety for motorist, pedestrians and cyclists. In order for a crash location to get federal funding from the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), the location must be in the top five percent within its region.

Of the 200 crash clusters located in Massachusetts below are top two cities of Boston and Cambridge that made the list.
