Birth Defects & Birth Injuries

Every parent looks forward to the birth of their new child. But what happens when something unexpected occurs and child is born with a serious birth defect? It's a serious problem that can result in needed surgery, prolonged care, and expensive medical treatment. Many defects reduce the child's life expectancy and significantly impact the surviving child's quality of life. Although some defects are unavoidable and simply a statistical possibility, many are avoidable if detected early. When your child's defect goes undetected, it's worthwhile to re-assess the medical provider's work to ensure a mistake has not been made.

Birth Defects Usually Fall into Two Categories:

Functional Birth Defects
A functional birth defect results in the improper functioning of a particular body part. Examples of a functional birth defect that cause harm to the brain and nervous system can result in things such as learning disabilities, speech impediments, autism, or down syndrome. Other problems can come in the form of vision disorders, muscular dystrophy or types of metabolic disorders.

Structural Birth Defects
This type results in serious problems for specific body parts, in both development and appearance. Examples of structural birth defects can be cleft palates, heart defects or abnormalities, or abnormal limbs. These are often critical defects that affect a child's body for the rest of their life.

There are cases in which birth defects or abnormalities can go undetected for weeks, months, or even years after the birth of the child. In many cases, birth defects are the result of medical mistakes which occur during pregnancy, labor, or during the delivery process. Many parents left to deal with their child's birth defect are under the misconception that it was a natural occurrence or could not have been avoided. If you believe your child may be the victim of a mistake made by the health care provider, call our office today to discuss your situation with an injury attorney.
