Dialysis Injuries and Death

Have you or a loved one has experienced any of the following symptoms during or after receiving dialysis?

  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • Heart attack/ myocardial infarction
  • Heart Problems
  • Cardiopulmonary arrest
  • Metabolic alkalosis
  • Stroke
  • Death

If so, the injury or death may have been the result of the negligent or reckless conduct of Fresenius Medical Care, a German company with U.S. operations based in Waltham, MA and one of the largest operators of dialysis centers in the world. Fresenius is the leading supplier of dialysis machines and products in the U.S., widely distributed through their clinics, as well as through third-party providers, such as nursing homes, medical clinics, and on-site dialysis providers.

On November 4, 2011, Fresenius issued an internal company memo, regarding GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, Fresenius medications used in the dialysis process. The memo stated that 941 patients who died in their clinics in 2010, after receiving these drugs, had elevated levels of bicarbonate in their blood, a factor which increases the likelihood of the heart attack, amongst other symptoms. The memo warned the staff of their own clinics regarding the drug risks, but Fresenius failed to warn doctors and staff of the third-party providers.

It wasn't until March 29, 2012, after the FDA obtained the internal memo, that Fresenius issued a warning to providers outside its company. Even then, the warning wasn't nearly as cautionary as the internal memo. If you or a loved one has experienced symptoms, including heart attack or death, while or shortly after receiving dialysis, call today and speak with a Massachusetts products liability attorney. The call is free and you will receive an immediate initial assessment of the strength of your case.
