Mirena Lawsuit

Mass Injury Firm, P.C. is now accepting potential Mirena lawsuits. These cases involve an intrauterine birth control device, produced by Bayer. Mirena is an intrauterine device, or IUD, which provides contraceptive protection for up to 5 years. Unfortunately, patients have reported serious adverse effects and potential life-threatening complications after the insertion of Mirena, such as uterus perforation or penetration and device incorporation into the uterus.

Mirena IUD Contraceptive

MIrena is a small device made of plastic, shaped like a "T," which is placed into the uterus by a qualified physician, usually at intervals of five years. The product us used to prevent unwanted pregnancy by releasing small, constant amounts of levonorgestrel, a progestin hormone derivative. Patients seeking to continue the treatment after the first 5-year period have an additional device inserted. The device can be extracted at any time by a qualified physician.

Mirena Side Effects

According to the FDA, Mirena adverse effects may include:

  • Ectopic pregnancy (a condition that involves the growth of the fertilized egg outside its normal location in the uterus.)
  • Normal pregnancy in the uterus (in spite of Mirena being inserted).
  • Sepsis with streptococcus Group A (a severe infection also known as pelvic inflammatory disease).
  • Incorporation of the device inside the uterus wall; Uterus wall or cervix perforation.

If the IUD contraceptive device is incorporated or if it perforates the uterine wall, it may cause serious bleeding, inflammation and an infection. These complications can lead to more severe side effects. In some patients, laparoscopic surgery is employed to remove Mirena from the uterus.

Deceptive Commercials and Warning About Mirena

The FDA sent a warning letter to Bayer Pharmaceutical in 2009 after it found that Mirena advertising and commercial messages exaggerated the utility of the IUD and diminished the associated risks. Moreover, the FDA raised concerns about commercial claims stating that Mirena may have the capacity to improve a woman's sexual life and help her in "looking and feeling great." As it was mentioned in the warning letter, about 5 percent of Mirena users experienced a reduced sexual drive in clinical studies.
